I’ve lived in Oaxaca de Juarez for over a year, which has allowed me to experience the city not only as a visitor but also from a local’s perspective. During my time in Oaxaca, I connected with the local community and immersed myself in its culture, language, and traditions.

I often feel a sense of community and belonging in different corners of the world, even when I’m far from my homeland. For me, the magic of traveling lies in discovering unique places and engaging with locals. That’s why I deeply believe in the importance of preserving the identity, culture, traditions, and ways of life of the places we visit.

As someone who travels full-time, I feel a personal responsibility to support experiences that contribute positively to the communities I encounter. Choosing mindful, community-centered activities is one small way I try to help protect local cultures and resist the effects of gentrification.

Regenerative Tourism: What It Is and Why It Matters to Local Communities

Regenerative tourism goes a step beyond sustainability by not only reducing harm but actively improving the places we visit. This approach prioritizes local communities, ecosystems, and cultural heritage, ensuring that tourism benefits the people and environment rather than depleting them. It’s not just about giving back – it’s about creating a cycle of positive impact, where travelers, local businesses, guides, accommodations, and artisans all play a role in supporting one another and nurturing the destination in meaningful ways.

For local communities, regenerative tourism fosters economic independence, preserves traditions, and supports conservation efforts. It encourages travelers to engage with local artisans, dine at family-owned restaurants, and participate in eco-friendly experiences. Small choices like these have a real impact, helping local families thrive while keeping their culture and way of life intact.

The Impact of Tourism on Local Communities: The Dark Side of Tourism

Tourism can bring incredible benefits, but when it isn’t managed responsibly, it can also create serious challenges. Over-tourism can put pressure on infrastructure, drive up living costs for residents, and even alter the cultural identity of a place. In destinations like Oaxaca, where Indigenous traditions have been passed down for generations, unregulated tourism can reduce meaningful experiences to staged performances rather than allowing them to remain authentic expressions of culture.

That’s why shifting toward a more thoughtful way of traveling is so important. By making conscious choices – like respecting cultural spaces, learning about local traditions, and supporting local businesses that give back to the community – travelers can help ensure that tourism remains a force for good.

Regenerative Tourism in Oaxaca

With an overwhelming number of companies offering tourism services in Oaxaca, not all are prepared – or even interested – in doing so responsibly. While some treat this region as a backdrop for profit, ignoring the environmental and cultural consequences, others are working hard to preserve what truly matters.

Maintaining balance is fragile, but despite the challenges, there are countless local initiatives reshaping what tourism should look like – grounded in respect, sustainable, and a strong focus on regeneration.

Traveling with conscious tourism companies in Oaxaca actively supports the restoration and celebration of both tangible and intangible heritage. From the preservation of Zapotec ruins to the continuation of ancestral weaving and pottery traditions, each experience can contribute to the cultural and environmental resilience of the region.

Oaxaca’s strength lies in its people – its artisans, cooks, farmers, and elders who carry deep knowledge. When you visit a family of artisans in Teotitlán del Valle, hike with a local guide in the Sierra Norte, learn about the significance of corn in Mixtec and Zapotec culture, or explore the Sierra Mixe guided by locals, you’re not just witnessing history – you’re helping to keep it alive.

Top Outdoor Adventures and Things to Do in Oaxaca

One of the best ways to support regenerative tourism is by leaving the city, exploring the surrounding areas, and learning more deeply about indigenous communities and their traditions. That’s where real impact happens! Here are some unique activities that offer a deeper understanding of Oaxaca’s vibrant culture:

Hiking in the State of Oaxaca

Oaxaca boasts numerous hiking trails, from the cloud forests of the Sierra Norte to the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua. A great area to discover is the one run by the Pueblos Mancomunados, a network of Indigenous villages, that offers community-run hiking trails allowing visitors to explore untouched landscapes while directly supporting local economies. You can check their website for more information.

Oaxaca Mountain Biking

For mountain biking enthusiasts, Oaxaca’s diverse trails provide exhilarating experiences. From the Sierra Norte to the Central Valley of Oaxaca to visiting Zapotec communities while e-biking, the region is a paradise for riders of all skill levels.

Enduro Mountain Biking in Oaxaca: Trails, Culture & Adventure

Oaxaca is quickly becoming a go-to destination for enduro mountain biking. With miles of singletrack weaving through the Sierra Norte mountains, riders can expect everything from pine forests and rocky ridgelines to flowing descents and tight switchbacks.

Top spots like La Cumbre Ixtepeji and Benito Juárez offer thrilling terrain and plenty of elevation, with trails passing through remote Zapotec villages and stunning natural scenery. Multi-day rides are also on the rise, combining camping with meaningful connections to local communities.

After the ride, Oaxaca’s rich culture takes over – think smoky mezcales, traditional dishes like tlayudas and mole negro, and a laid-back vibe that’s hard to leave behind. Whether you’re here for the adrenaline or the atmosphere, biking in Oaxaca is an experience that stays with you.

The Oaxacan coast is home to some of Mexico’s best surf spots. Although Puerto Escondido is the most famous location attracting surfers from all across the world, smaller towns like Mazunte and Zipolite provide a more relaxed atmosphere. Outdoor Adventures in Oaxaca – My Experience with Regenerative Tourism

With breathtaking landscapes – from mountains to coastline – Oaxaca is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re hiking through the Sierra Norte, riding along scenic trails, or surfing on the Pacific coast, there are countless ways to experience Oaxaca’s natural beauty.

Last autumn, I had the chance to go on two different adventures with Coyote Aventuras, and both days ended up being my absolute favorite moments from my time back in beautiful Oaxaca.

Exploring Santiago Apoala: A Day of Hiking, Waterfalls & Mixtec Indigenous Culture

This region is deeply tied to the ancient history of Mexico. In the Mixtec codices – illustrated books that tell the stories and myths of the past – Santiago Apoala is described as a sacred place where water was born, which is exactly what “Apoala” means.

The drive itself was part of the experience – starting in the dry, cactus-filled landscapes of Oaxaca and gradually shifting into the lush Mixtec mountains. When we stopped at a viewpoint for a brief breakfast picnic, I could already tell this place was special. The tiny village, surrounded by massive limestone cliffs, felt like a hidden gem waiting to be explored.

We had a local guide who helped us navigate all corners of this stunning natural reserve. We stopped at waterfalls and hidden pools. The highlight was definitely Cascada de Cola de Caballo – a massive waterfall pouring into a turquoise pool. The water was icy but too inviting to resist. Surrounded by cliffs and crystal-clear waters, it was a moment of pure connection with nature.

We also visited Peñas Gemelas. These towering limestone walls were covered in moss and wild plants. The whole area felt untouched and full of life. Our tour leader, Pablo, explained the significance of the location and invited us to participate in a short ritual to honor this sacred place.

Before heading back, we had lunch at a small, family-owned restaurant in the village, enjoying homemade food with traditional flavors. It was the perfect way to wrap up the experience before making our way back to Oaxaca City.

Hiking with Rescue Dogs in the Sierra Norte: An Adventure with Meaningful Purpose

This easily ranks as one of my favorite days during my three-month stay in Oaxaca last autumn.

The morning started at Coyote Aventura’s office, where we met the team and, of course, the stars of the day – the doggies!

On the drive up to Ixtepeji, our guide explained more about Caravana Canina’s work. This non-profit organization in Oaxaca is dedicated to rescuing, sterilizing, and rehoming street dogs, while also promoting responsible pet care. It was eye-opening to learn how significant the issue of street dog overpopulation is in Oaxaca and how much effort goes into addressing it.

Once we arrived at the ecopark, we had a quick picnic before setting off on the hike. The route was tailored to the group’s level, and hiking alongside the dogs made the experience even more special. Some were confident trail leaders, while others needed a little patience and encouragement – especially a couple of the smaller ones.

After the hike, we stopped at a small local spot still within the Sierra Norte area for a well-earned meal. The food was delicious and came in generous portions.

Conclusion

Oaxaca offers incredible adventures and cultural experiences, but it’s also a place where regenerative travel can make a real impact. By choosing activities that prioritize sustainability and benefit local communities, you help preserve the region’s natural beauty and heritage.

Your choices, from supporting local artisans to participating in eco-conscious activities, contribute to a positive change for the environment and the people who call Oaxaca home.
