Spain - Portugal zipline

This is an article that highlights one of the most interesting activities you can do in the province of Huelva (Spain). While I was living in Isla Cristina, I heard there is a Spain – Portugal zipline, the only cross-border zipline in the world! How cool is that? You already know me a wee bit, I am always crazy about traveling abroad, so I couldn’t miss the chance to experience something like this!

Keep reading to know more about the zipline adventure!

The company running this service ‘Limite Zero’, recommends customers to book the activity at least 24h before coming to the area; this way you make sure you can jump cross-countries and will make things go smoother as they will already have the equipment ready for you!

This zipline has become the superstar activity in the area

For the price you’ll pay, you’ll have the zipline jump included, a ferry ticket to cross the river back from Portugal to Spain and a van drive to the top of the hill where the zipline platform is – the website offers a 4×4 Jeep service, but that’s not the experience I had –  in any case, the drive up hill is very short.

Once in the platform you will get the equipment ready and they’ll explain the zipline procedure in order for you to be aware of all the steps of the jump. The zipline is 720 metres long and you’ll fly from one country to the other at a speed of 70 to 80km/h. They also offer a professional photo service for 5€ extra – I personally paid for it as I was traveling alone and wanted to have a shot of the experience!

Magic – The clock is now 1h back! One of the several cool things about this activity is that when you finish the zipline, you are one hour behind and that gives you some extra time to visit the beautiful Portuguese town of Alcoutim.

Once you explore the town, you’ll be able to use the ticket ‘Limite Zero’ provides you, to return back to Spain – 8pm is the latest ferry you can take.

A day spent in two countries

I spent half of my day in Portugal and my other half in Spain. In less than 10 hours, I discovered two cities in two different countries. How many times can someone say this? Unless you live or are staying right on the border of a country, it is very difficult – logistically talking – to explore two different countries in one day.

Thanks to that zipline located in Spain, I arrived in Portugal in record time! If you are planning to come to this area, I would recommend you to visit both towns and definitely leave more time to discover Alcoutim in Portugal, which offers a larger number of things to do and see, compared to Sanlúcar de Guadiana. Here is a little guide for you to make the most of your time while in the area:

Things to do in Alcoutim

  • Breakfast at Cafe Alcoutim

You’ve earned a nice breakfast after that adrenaline rush! Stop by this Café and enjoy the view towards Sanlúcar de Guadiana. It’ll make a good start of your day in Portugal

  • Walk around the town

This town is dreamy. Colorful houses and flowers in bloom will guide you through the beautiful narrow streets.

  • Visit the Castle and Museum

This 13th century castle is surrounded by big stone walls that you can also explore. From the top of these, you will have a wonderful 360 view of the town and surrounding areas. Moreover, there is an archeological museum and an exhibition of ‘islamic board games’ inside the castle area.

  • Chill at the Beach ‘Praia Fluvial’

I was a bit skeptical about this one, but turned out to be my favourite! When I read there was a beach at the river I didn’t have high expectations at all, yet I decided to see how it looked like; to my surprise, the Praia Fluvial in Alcoutim is a sandy riverside beach with very nice and clear water. There is a café here too and several sun umbrellas. The beach is disabled friendly and they even have a baywatch during the summer months!

Sanlúcar de Guadiana

This tranquil spanish town with less than 400 inhabitants is a very peaceful place but attracts many visitors thanks to its renowned cross-country zipline. The office is located right on the border of the River Guadiana and adventurers and adrenaline seekers from all over the world come to this town to explore the area and practice several sports

  • Adrenaline rush

Apart from the zipline adventure, you can undertake hiking trails in the area and there are also several water sports you can practice in the Guadiana River, such as: flyboard, kayak, paddle surf, jet ski and more.

  • Visit San Marcos Castle

A white fortress located to the east of Sanlúcar de Guadiana. Visits inside are allowed, but sadly it was closed due to covid restrictions, while I was in town. To get here you’ll need to go up hill, checking if they’re open just before heading there.

  • Nuestra Señora de las Flores Church

A 16th century church, with a very andalusian style that is worth the visit. In front of the building you will find a statue resembling the traditional religious dance ‘Danza de las Flores’ (flowers dance) which is held in this town every year.

  • The windmill viewpoint

Ten minutes away from the town, you can walk to this viewpoint from where you can see the whole town, including San Marcos Castle and a great part of Alcoutim too. It is a peaceful area, perfect for a picnic and sunset watching.
